SJV UC Scholarship Recipient Ebony Goytia Hermosillo '21

My name is Ebony Goytia Hermosillo and I am a Chicana from a low-income single-parent family in Dos Palos. My family had been homeless when I was younger, and as a high schooler we lived in I am the first person in my family to go to college, while not being easy it has been rewarding. I chose UC Merced because it was close to home and the financial aid was perfect for me. I was excited to be going to a UC, as well. As soon as I had found out there was a UC in Merced, I knew that I would apply to it.

What are your career goals, ambitions and/or aspirations?
I plan on gaining my master's in Social Work from USC, serving in the Peace Corps, working as a social worker, and ultimately starting a non-profit organization. In the Peace Corps, I want to cultivate a sense of direction in students' lives, motivate them to continue with their education, and instill a desire in them for community engagement. My main goals are to continue serving the youth and educate people on social and health issues.

How has UC Merced prepared you for your journey following graduation?
UC Merced has gifted me with the opportunity to push my comfortability to its limits, my undergraduate definitely changed me. I was able to obtain several leadership positions during my education which furthered my desire to work with young adults. The internships and fellowships I had aided in my professional endeavors to continue on with graduate school and to work in a foreign country

Can you describe what your experience has been like attending UC Merced? What do you find most exciting/appealing about UC Merced?
Even though I had lived nearby Merced, within Merced County, only two cities away-- there was still so much for me to explore. There were places I had not been to with people that I would soon grow close to. I loved going to the mall, hanging around downtown, and walking the trails. It was endless fun (when I had finally finished homework and I didn't need to study).

At UC Merced, there was such a large student body compared to my high school. I met so many amazing people throughout my years. I would see their faces around campus and sometimes on my phone screen on social media. I'd see some in my classes, in the dining center, or at a campus event. The events were definitely amazing. It's crazy that I can say I've seen Ray J, Ella Mai, Plain White T's, and more perform.

How has this scholarship impacted you? What does this support mean to you?
The scholarship was an exceptional help! My family has been poor for generations, and the burden of achieving financial stability, let alone wealth, has fallen onto my shoulders. It is a tough burden to bear so the help goes a long way in easing the stress. Plus, knowing where it came from means a lot. I hope to be able to give back in a similar manner to other students like me one day.

What message would you say to the donors who supported your scholarship fund?
I appreciate all of the resources that you put in for students such as myself. It truly does matter to us and it does not go to waste. The scholarship aided in a secure feeling about my finances for my last year. Thank you so much! This scholarship was helpful in allowing me the necessities to succeed in my education and my wishes for the future.
