As the newest campus of the University of California system, UC Merced has the unique opportunity to think intentionally about the future of education and what a modern, collaborative, and cross-disciplinary research institution can do.
We are rethinking the nature of management education to create the management school of the future, the Ernest & Julio Gallo School, which will be supported in part by a generous gift from the E. & J. Gallo Family and Winery.
The Ernest & Julio Gallo School will support and promote the integrated research, teaching, and service missions of social scientists, natural scientists, engineers, and practitioners in areas related to the management and science of complex coupled human-technological and human-environmental systems, as well as the behavior, management, and governance of individuals, firms, institutions, and economies given rapidly evolving technologies, populations, and the global environment.
Combining elements from management, cognitive and behavioral sciences, economics, computational modeling, studies of complex systems, and management of natural resources, among other areas, our faculty-led effort to develop a new interdisciplinary school at UC Merced combines the Departments of Cognitive and Information Sciences, Economics and Business Management, and Management of Complex Systems to focus on the complexity of real-world problems and systems, on the need to gather and analyze data and information in real time, on behavior and management of individuals, firms, institutions, and economies, and on sustainability of coupled human-natural systems.
The Ernest & Julio Gallo School will incorporate existing educational programs in economics, management, cognitive science, and philosophy, and will expand to include new areas related to data science, sustainability, resource management, and complex systems science, among others.
We will expand our novel, practice-based programs, building on the success of our one-year Master of Management – the first such program in California – to educate and train the workforce and leaders of today and tomorrow.
