What does being a UC Merced alumnus mean to you?

To me it means being a trailblazer for future alumni. UC Merced was established as the first American research university of the 21st century. This also meant that as a new campus, UC Merced provided a unique opportunity for students to forge their own traditions and firsts at the university. From my perspective coming from the Central Valley, when UC Merced was established it made gaining a college education from a UC more accessible for residents in the Valley, some of whom were trailblazers in their own right by being the first in their families to attend a university. It was this pioneering spirit that was a part of us then, and I believe that still continues as UC Merced alumni are paving blazing new trails in the professional world.
